Why page speed matters
Speed is both a user-experience and an SEO issue. People abandon pages that hang, so a slow site bleeds conversions before anyone reads it. And since Core Web Vitals became a Google ranking signal, a sluggish page can quietly cost you positions too.
The goal isn't a perfect 100, it's clearing Google's "good" thresholds and giving real visitors a fast, stable experience.
What the Core Web Vitals mean
Three metrics carry most of the weight. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is how long until the main content shows, aim for under 2.5 seconds. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) is how much the page jumps as it loads, aim for under 0.1. Interaction to Next Paint (INP), approximated in the lab by Total Blocking Time, is how quickly the page responds to input.
Lab tools like this one estimate these in a controlled run. Real-world "field" data from actual visitors can differ, so treat the lab score as a diagnostic, not a verdict.
How to speed a page up
Most wins come from a short list: compress and lazy-load images, cut and defer unused JavaScript, cache aggressively, and reserve space for images and embeds so nothing shifts. Work down the opportunities list, biggest saving first.
